Slide into the New Year!

For the Hot Foot Honeys, the holidays were merry and bright!  After spending a total of over 20 hours in group rehearsals since September (not even counting small groups!), we’ve enjoyed a quick break before hitting the ground tapping for our 2020 showcase.  We are grateful to spend another year together, and reflect on what made 2019 an incredible year! We started our year off in January with an incredible master class, led by Leo Sandoval of Dorrance Dance. A fun, challenging experience, everyone felt a little silly and ready to create! In February, our artistic director Marianne Bell was honored with not one, but TWO awards from the Destined 2 Dance awards. She was awarded both the “Most Inspirational Choreographer” and “Most Innovative Tap”.  There is no one more deserving of this honor, not only for her incredible work in the dance community, but for the work she does for the Memphis community as a whole.  She is truly a real rock star, and we are so fortunate to have her in our corner! In April, we had what we feel was the best showcase yet! Time Stepping gave us an opportunity to work with some fabulous collaborators and gifted guest artists.  We had more feet in seats than years prior, exposing even more people to tap dance!  One of the highlights of this was performing the empowering piece, set on us by Josh Scribner.  We truly enjoyed the whirlwind weekend we spent learning this choreography, and the amazing crowd response. As most of you know, one of our favorite parts of being the only professional tap company...

2019-2020 is HOT HOT HOT!

The Hot Foot Honeys are officially back in the studio, gearing up for the biggest, best season yet! First and foremost: You asked for it, Memphis, and we are DELIVERING!  Assistant Artistic Director and company member Kelby Auten will be offering a series of adult tap classes, starting September 17th!  This will be from 7-8pm at Theatreworks! If this doesn’t sate your appetite for tap, we also have TWO opportunities coming up for Master classes! Matt Shields will be making a pit stop with Postmodern Jukebox in Memphis, and will be sharing his incredible talent with our community on October 2nd. The following weekend, the Hot Foot Honeys will be having a whirlwind weekend with the incomparable Charles Renato!  Not only will he be setting a piece for our spring show (you will NOT want to miss it!), but he will also be offering a master class on October 12th! Be sure to visit our website to reserve your spot.  Space is limited! The Hot Foot Honeys are also thrilled to announce that we have a new company member to add to our Hive!  Emily Voogd is a student at The University of Memphis, majoring in Theater with an emphasis in Dance, and minoring in Vocal Performance with an emphasis in Opera. She has trained in dance for sixteen years, studying under Matthew Lovegood, Judy Leppek, Patrick Roddy, Jacque Robinson, Lane Alexander, and Bril Barrett. She has studied voice for five years under Katie O’Rear, Karina Brazas, Sharen North Jones, and Joel Johnston. Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, Emily worked as an assistant teacher and choreographed for a tap competition team....

The Hot Foot Honeys 2018 Year in Review

Winter, spring, summer and fall, the Hot Foot Honeys are tapping through them all!  We would like to start with a sincere thank you to all of our supporters this year:  you are truly the bread and butter (with a little bit of Honey!) of what we do.  Your generous donations and attendance make it possible to continue doing amazing things year after year!  For information regarding charitable donations and other ways you can support us, take a look at our website! It’s never been easier to support your favorite tap company. Visit us here! We have had an amazing year of expanding our community outreach: Nothing is more important to the Hot Foot Honeys than reaching parts of the Memphis community that may not have access to the arts otherwise. We started the very early part of our 2018-2019 season with a collaboration with FEMMEMPHIS, with their production of Pretty.  This show bridged the gap with theater and dance, and allowed us to create meaningful relationships across the Memphis theater community. The Honeys brought improv to the Downtown Get Down. Despite the heat, these ladies were moving their feet.  Since many of the Hot Foot Honeys are also teachers, community outreach gearing towards exposing children to tap is one of our top priorities! So far, the company has participated in the Memphis Children’s Theater Festival and GPAC’s Peanut Butter & Jam-Tap, Rhythm and Rhyme.  Our reach doesn’t extend to just Memphis youth though! The Honeys also performed a very special piece for the Survivors Party: a tribute to locals who have survived domestic abuse.  This fall, we had the...

Flap into Fall!

Our 2018-2019 season is in full swing! It may still be hot, and the leaves aren’t quite falling, but the Honeys have fallen right back into our groove, with three weeks in the studio behind us. Our company auditions in August were success! There are FOUR new company members, each bringing their own gifts and style to the table.  Welcome, Chey, Kelby, Brooke, and Katie! If you’re jonesing to see some live tap, our next performance opportunity will be a real treat. Not only will you be supporting your ONLY local tap company, but more importantly you will also be showing your love and support for survivors of domestic abuse as they begin their journey towards a brighter future.  The FRESH START AHEAD event will be held October 5th. The time to dust off your tap shoes is quickly approaching! The first workshop of the season will be October 20th for beginner and absolute beginner (you don’t even need tap shoes to participate!) More details to follow! Keep your eyes on the prize every Tuesday! We are hosting a weekly #taptriviaTuesday event on our Facebook page, where you can answer trivia questions pertaining to women in tap. There will be fabulous prizes, so be sure to go like our page! First up, Deneka Lewis and her fierce vocal stylings.  We are ever grateful that she continues to grace the stage with us with her beautiful voice.  You can visit her Facebook and take a peek and some of the pieces she’s been performing! Next, we have Siphne Sylve, beatboxing extraordinaire.  We are so excited to collaborate again, because you’ll truly never hear anything quite like this! Please visit Siphne’s website here!...

For the Love of Dance….

For some, Valentine’s Day conjures up images of pink and red, sweet treats, and bouquets of flowers.  For tap dancers, this day holds a very different meaning:  February 14th, 1946, the iconic Gregory Hines was born.  He is responsible for inspiring a new generation of tappers with his diverse talents and passion for spreading the love of tap.  Thanks to his efforts in Congress and the film “Tap”, along with the help of many other artists, we celebrate National Tap Dance Day every May 25th, a day that unifies dancers around the world.  His lifelong love of dance has inspired many of the members of the Hot Foot Honeys, and a special solo will be dedicated to him during our spring showcase, Tapography.  Come share in the love and honor his memory April 20-22 at the Buckman! “I’m going to tap until I can’t: I’ll be so old, all I can do is walk out from the wings to stage center.  But I’ll be there.” -In loving memory of Gregory Hines (February 14th, 1946-August 9, 2003) Our first tap workshop of the year was a wonderful success!  Our beginner and absolute beginner tappers filled both studio spaces at the Evergreen Theater with such rhythm and energy.  A huge thank you to everyone who attended, our incredible board members who go above and beyond to make every Hot Foot Honeys event a success, and Hot Foot Honeys members Cristina and Danielle for being the fearless leaders of each workshop group.  We can’t wait for the next workshop event, which will feature Asha Griffith!  Keep a close eye out for more...
