For the Hot Foot Honeys, the holidays were merry and bright! After spending a total of over 20 hours in group rehearsals since September (not even counting small groups!), we’ve enjoyed a quick break before hitting the ground tapping for our 2020 showcase. We are grateful to spend another year together, and reflect on what made 2019 an incredible year!
We started our year off in January with an incredible master class, led by Leo Sandoval of Dorrance Dance. A fun, challenging experience, everyone felt a little silly and ready to create!
In February, our artistic director Marianne Bell was honored with not one, but TWO awards from the Destined 2 Dance awards. She was awarded both the “Most Inspirational Choreographer” and “Most Innovative Tap”. There is no one more deserving of this honor, not only for her incredible work in the dance community, but for the work she does for the Memphis community as a whole. She is truly a real rock star, and we are so fortunate to have her in our corner!
In April, we had what we feel was the best showcase yet! Time Stepping gave us an opportunity to work with some fabulous collaborators and gifted guest artists. We had more feet in seats than years prior, exposing even more people to tap dance! One of the highlights of this was performing the empowering piece, set on us by Josh Scribner. We truly enjoyed the whirlwind weekend we spent learning this choreography, and the amazing crowd response.
As most of you know, one of our favorite parts of being the only professional tap company in Memphis is the numerous opportunities for community outreach. One of our favorite events is the Memphis Children’s Theater Festival in May. This event brings together the rich artistic community in Memphis, exposing a new generation to various types of performance, ranging from theater to dance. Our smiles really say it all: we LOVE this event, and seeing the excited, engaged faces of the children attending the event!
After taking a break from the summer heat, we entered back into the studio with a full schedule. October brought us two whirlwind weekends with a master class with Matt Shields, and a master class/residency weekend with Charles Renato. The studio was packed with people excited to learn, and set the stage for even more guest artists to offer their expertise to the growing Memphis tap community!
Another highlight of our year was the opportunity to perform in December for the Martyrs of Uganda Circle fundraising event “Tappin’ N Jazz” alongside the wonderful musicians of the North Star Jazz Band. We brought back some of our favorite pieces from the year, and exposed a brand new audience to the best tap dance Memphis has to offer.
Finally, we’re starting our 2020 with a BANG! We will be hosting the first workshop of the year, with two classes for beginner and absolute beginner. NO TAP SHOES REQUIRED, just bring yourself, and a willingness to have fun! Join us January 18th at 3pm. Advance tickets at a discounted price are available for purchase on our website here!
